    The main reason you don’t want to connect the negative clamp to the battery post and away from the battery on something grounded (metal) is that a dead battery emits hydrogen gas. Of course, hydrogen gas is extremely flammable and the spark created making a connection near or on the battery can set it off. If you smell rotten eggs or sulfur around the battery don’t even bother jumping. You always run the risk of damaging the electrical system. Jump as your own risk.

    i have a chevy cobalt and the battery is in the trunk with the spare tire, where should i put the black connector?

    So this procedure wouldn’t affect the computer system by any chance ? I was told that it does in some vehicles. Is that true ?
