The future is now, friends. In the space of just a few short months we’ve sampled both ends of the electric car spectrum, and can now say that a world without oil won’t be so dull as you might have once thought it would be. The Tesla Roadster we drove a few months back was a revelation; its performance was staggering — and the LEAF is just as impressive, if not as quick. What these two cars have in common, though, is that they’re the stuff of science fact and not fiction. The Mercedes-Benz’s F-Cell car, which was touring Australia recently, is great but you can’t buy one and won’t be able to for a wee while yet. The Tesla, Nissan LEAF and Mitsubishi i-MiEV, on the other hand, are real cars that you can buy and drive now. Well, sort of. The LEAF won’t go on-sale here until next year — pricing is yet to be confirmed but expect it to be up around $60K — about the same as a top-spec Toyota Prius.
